In the City:
a mindmap
of urban living

When walking through a city, I can’t help but think of its dualities. On one hand, the city is a place of culture, diversity and action but on the other, it is also a place that lacks space, organic materials and the freedom to enjoy nature at its simplest, such as seeing the stars. Signs and billboards overtake our visual field; dust and grime line the streets and stain our faces; the air is thick with exhaust from slowly moving cars and the sky is muted by the lights. My work for In the City, deals with these musings about city life and represents the aspects of the cold homogeneity of the cityscape.  My drawings function like a personal diary of the visual, emotional and psychological information left-over from the stimuli and swirl of being in the city. Like a mind-map of the psychological effects of the urban sprawl, I want to draw attention to the grayness and grittiness of the city. An overwhelming repetition of squares, rectangles and all things inorganic take over the space leaving the compositions filled with the marking of a concentration of people and architecture.  In these drawings, no space has been left untouched. Like the people and buildings that overtake the natural landscape, I fill my work with the anxieties brought about from the claustrophobic busyness of the streets.
